Assignment 12- The Rocking Horse Winner

What do you think of when you hear the word luck?  Are good luck and bad luck what they appear to be?
Read p. 1006
1.  If you bet $5 on a horse race and your horse wins 50 to 1, how much money would you win?
2.  Note the reference to Paul's eyes.  How do they reflect his mental state?
3.  What can the reader infer about the mother in the story based on the descriptions of her background, marriage, and relationship to her children?
4.  What is the setting of the story?
5.  Identify a simile that is used to describe Basset.
6.  Why does Paul's gaze make Uncle Oscar uneasy?
7.  Compare Pal's behavior at the racetrack with that of the Frenchman.  Identify the irony in the two characters conflicting behavior.
8.  What do Paul's eyes turning to stone and his mother's heart turning to stone symbolize?
9.  How would  you describe Paul's relationship with his mother?
10.  Why is this ironic--"If you are lucky, you have money" in the light of how the story ended?
