Assignment 7- A Modest Proposal

Objective: I will learn to recognize verbal irony.
Verbal irony is saying the opposite of what you mean.
Read A Modest Proposal page 613.
1.  Why is the title an example of verbal irony?
2.  Imagine that you are the editor of an 18th century newspaper.  To help your staff decide whether to print this story, write an email in which you list the pros and cons of publishing it.

Assignment 6-Parable of the Prodigal Son

 Objective:  Understand and appreciate parables.


Prodigal-[prod-i-guhl]wastefully or recklessly extravagant
This is a Bible story. Read the  one page story p. 438-439 Purple Book
Parables usually have the following characteristics:


• They teach a moral lesson in a short and focused format.
• They are a type of allegory, a work in which the characters and events stand for abstract ideas and principles.
1.  Have you every been accused of something that you didn't do, or do you know of someone else who was falsely accused?  If so, how did you feel about the accusation?  Why do you think it was made?  Was it ever disproved?  Discuss the causes  and effects of the false accusations in a paragraph.  Make sure you have a topic sentence.


2.  Define the following words:  parable, repetition, credible, and inference.


3. In line 21, why do you think  the son's words are repeated-- or the use of repetition?


4.  What values does the parable suggest are important?
5.  Explain  how the characteristics of a parable apply to this story.
6.  If you were in the father's place how would you have reacted?







Assignment 5 Macbeth

Essential Question:  What can we learn about ourselves from reading Shakespearean work?
Define:  blank verse, soliloquy, and monologue.

Read the Macbeth summary and the character list.

Assignment 4-King Arthur

King Arthur's favorite knight, Sir Launcelot, has fallen in love with the King's wife, Gwynevere.  The secret love affair is exposed and Gwynevere is sentenced to burn at the stake.  What happens?

Pick a partner and choose one of the following topics to create a powerpoint (15 slides) related to King Arthur and the Arthurian Legend:

• Queen Guinevere
• Chivalry
• Knighthood
• Excalibur
• Merlin the magician

Assignment 3

The Canterbury Tales
• Look up Geoffrey Chaucer-write a paragraph telling me who he was.  Be specific.
• Go to wikipedia and read the synopsis (summary) of The Canterbury Tales.  Answer the following questions in proper English form siting examples from text on your blog (new page):
1. Why is the work entitled The Canterbury Tales?
2. How many tales are there?
3. What is the definition of a literary tale?
4.  What was the agreement for sharing the tales?
5.  Why do scholars consider the work unfinished?
Read The Pardoner's Prologue (p. 142, 143 There is a CD available upon request.)
1.  The Pardoner's Tale is a moral tale.  What is the moral? (line 5-8)
2.  What does the Pardoner do for a living? (line 23-25)
3.  What is the Pardoner's attitude toward those who listen to him preach? (line 19-22)
4.  What is the irony in what the Pardoner does?
Read pp 144-151 and answer the seven questions written in blue in the margins.

Urban Legend
1. What is it/ what are they anyway, and do they have to take place in the city?
Here are some common elements of urban legends:
• happen to a friend or a friend of a friend
• credible: although unlikely, it could happen
• involves something horrifying or bizarre
• involves an unexpected twist
• purpose to teach a lesson

Read the following two urban legends. 2. What is the lesson of each?

Assignment 1

Benchmark:  LA.12.12.2.1.7-Analyze, interpret, and evaluate author’s use of descriptive language.
Essential Question: How accurately does music reflect life?
Objective:  I will be able to recognize literary terms and identify examples in music.

Print out the lyrics of your favorite song.  Write a 5-paragraph essay explaining how the lyrics of your song reflect life.  Be sure to cite lyrics from your song.  Extra points will be given for use of figurative language in your essay.
